East Sussex honey comes from two very different landscapes. Ashdown Forest, on the highest sandy ridge of the High Weald, is one of the largest areas of lowland heath in south-east England, its dry heath dominated by ling, bell heather and dwarf gorse. Ashdown Forest Honey keeps a dozen colonies at Fairwarp, and Little Bees Larder and Park Farm Cottage Bee Products work the High Weald around Uckfield and Maresfield. On the coast, Flo's Bees at St Leonards-on-Sea sells wildflower and borage honey.
Beekeeping in the county is organised by the Sussex Beekeepers' Association through five divisions: Brighton and Lewes, Eastbourne, East Grinstead, Hastings and Rother, and High Weald.
Markets are a good place to buy. Little Bees Larder has regular stalls at Lewes Farmers' Market and the monthly Fairwarp village market, and its full range is at Middle Farm near Firle. Mr BeeKeeper sells Brighton and Hove honey direct, and Purely Bees in Bexhill sells honey from its own hives and those of trusted East Sussex beekeepers.
