London honey is prized for its complex flavours. The London Beekeepers' Association puts this down to cities usually having a greater diversity of flowers and a longer flowering season than the countryside. The flavour can change from one neighbourhood to the next, and several producers here sell honey by area: The Good Bee Company from Brixton, Dulwich, Herne Hill and West Norwood, Bushwood Bees from hives across Waltham Forest, Newham and Redbridge, and Hendon Honey from the gardens, parks and verges of north-west London.
There is a catch. A 2020 report from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew found evidence that London, and particularly the centre, has more honey bee colonies than its green space can support, which puts pressure on wild bees. Most of the producers below keep bees away from the centre, in places such as Walthamstow, Leytonstone, Eltham, Hendon, Croydon's Lloyd Park and Ruislip.
Honey is mostly bought direct. Pinner & Ruislip Beekeepers Association, founded in 1954, sells its honey from its Ruislip clubhouse on Sunday mornings, and Winwood Honey sells from its apiary in Lloyd Park. Most of the others sell online, with collection or local delivery. The LBKA also keeps a list of members with honey to sell, many of them collection-only.
