The worker bee has been Manchester's emblem since the Industrial Revolution, and bees fly around the globe on the city's coat of arms. The Manchester & District Beekeepers' Association is based at the Dower House in Heaton Park, Prestwich. It has a bee garden and an observation hive there, sells Manchester Beekeepers Honey from its own apiaries at the visitor centre, and runs a swarm service.
Honey here ranges from suburban to moorland. Manchester Honey Company sells raw honey labelled by postcode (Sale M33, Urmston M41, Stretford M32) from its shop in Sale Moor. To the north, Bearded Barista Honey has more than 20 hives around Ramsbottom, including bees at Ramsbottom Fire Station and in Nuttall Park, and takes its heather honey from an apiary up on the moors at Haslingden. Atherton Honey sells single-origin honey from hives near Hulton Park, Cutacre and Pennington Flash, and Numidia Honey has apiaries around Wigan and Skelmersdale.
Several producers sell through local shops rather than from the door. Bearded Barista honey is sold at Nuttall Park Tea Room and Tottington Village Butchers, and Early Bank Honey from Stalybridge is stocked at the Milkomilk-o-licious farm shop on Matley Lane.
