Banffshire is a historic county rather than a council area: since 1996 it has been split between Aberdeenshire and Moray. It runs along 30 miles of Moray Firth coast from Spey Bay to Cullykhan Bay, with a long tail stretching inland to Dufftown, Aberlour and Ben Rinnes. That upland end includes heather moor used by beekeepers: Moray Beekeepers' Association has held heather picnics visiting hives on the moors above Dufftown and on Ben Rinnes.
