Edinburgh's beekeepers have been organised for more than a century: the Edinburgh Beekeepers' Association was formed in 1918 and merged in 1924 with the Midlothian association (founded 1894) to become today's Edinburgh & Midlothian Beekeepers' Association. Every June the Scottish Beekeepers' Association runs the Honey Tent at the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, with honey competition classes and tastings of honeys from across Scotland.
Scottish heather honey is part of the local offer. From the south-west of the city bees can reach the Pentland Hills: Woodhall Bees in Colinton sells heather and blossom honey from hives foraging the Pentlands, Colinton Dell and the Water of Leith, and TheSix Honey Co presses heather honey and harvests spring blossom honey from its family's garden hives in Oxgangs. Simply Honey produces single-origin honeys from bees across Edinburgh and the Lothians, and Edinburgh Honey Co sells honey harvested in East and West Lothian from its shops on Easter Road and Morningside Road. Honeybeard, also based in the city, sells raw honey from beekeepers between the south of Glasgow, Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders, so its honey is Scottish rather than local to Edinburgh.
