Midlothian's beekeeping is long organised: the Midlothian Beekeepers' Association was founded in 1894 and merged with Edinburgh's in 1924 to form today's Edinburgh & Midlothian Beekeepers' Association. Each summer its members can take their bees to the association's heather site in the Pentland Hills.
Buying Midlothian honey is often a case of catching it when it's available. Firth Home Farm at Roslin sells its own honey, with eggs and farm produce, from a sales cart at the end of the farm drive as well as online. At Dalkeith Country Park, a glass observation hive run by a third-generation beekeeper has produced small amounts of park honey, sold at the estate's Restoration Yard store. Midlothian Honey and The Scottish Honey are small producers around Penicuik.
