Most Swansea honey is Gower honey. In 1956 the peninsula became the first place in the UK designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and its landscape runs from dunes and salt marsh in the north to limestone cliffs in the south, with small fields, wooded valleys and open commons around the hills of Cefn Bryn and Rhossili Down. Little Walterstone Farm at Penmaen says its bees forage on Cefn Bryn, and Oddington Bees, at Overton near Port Eynon, takes honey from hives on Gower's cliffs, coast and farmland.
Swansea and District Beekeepers Society runs the honey tent at the Gower Show, with a honey show its members rate second only to the Royal Welsh and a shop selling members' honey and hive products.
Local honey is easy to find. Little Walterstone's honey is sold in around 30 Gower and Swansea shops, cafés and farm shops; Oddington Bees has a roadside honesty stand at Overton; and Aur Y Ddraig, whose apiaries sit either side of the Llwchwr valley near Pontarddulais, supplies boutique stores and local outlets rather than selling from its office.
