Beekeeper David Wainwright got his first hive in 1974 and, after years working with bark-hive beekeepers in Zambia, set up the company on his return to the UK – the first to bring organic African honey to Britain. Its Organic Forest Honey comes from small-scale forest beekeepers in Zambia, Ethiopia and Cameroon who use traditional bark hives.

Wainwright's Bee Farm is the own-hives side of the business: around 750 hives based in west Wales, with further operations in Shropshire and Wiltshire, set out in groups of 12 to 24 hives on farmland. It aims to produce distinct varieties – Welsh wildflower and Welsh heather honey, Shropshire spring and summer honey, Salisbury Plain honey and borage honey – and occasionally sells another beekeeper's honey, such as French lavender, under the same label.

There is no shop. Honey is packed at the company's Aberystwyth factory, including for other brands and supermarket own labels. Organic Forest Honey is sold in Waitrose, Holland & Barrett and independent wholefood shops; look for 'Wainwright's' in shops and online.
