Most of the beekeepers listed in Tyne and Wear keep their bees in the city itself. Jesmond Vale Honey is a hobby beekeeper with six colonies in Jesmond, and all proceeds go back into the hobby. Superior Honey in Gateshead started with a few rooftop hives and sells raw honey and honeycomb from its urban hives online.
The easiest place to meet local beekeepers is Saltwell Park in Gateshead. The Tyneside Beekeepers Association keeps its club apiary there. Its volunteers are in the park most weekends in spring and summer, weather permitting, selling honey, beeswax and candles, and they run taster sessions where visitors borrow a bee suit, children's sizes included, and join a hive inspection. Proceeds go back into the club.
Gorilla Food Co., a wholefood company on the North Tyne Industrial Estate, also sells 'Canny Wildflower Honey', a light raw honey harvested from Northumberland and Tyne and Wear with clover, hedgerow and tree blossom in the mix.
