Haltwhistle, near Hadrian's Wall, is home to one of Northumberland's biggest beekeeping businesses. Northumberland Honey Co, founded in 2015 by Luke and Suzie Hutchinson, keeps more than 400 colonies in the Tyne and Irthing valleys, breeds queen bees – including a Northumberland Dark Bee line – and produces around 20 tonnes of honey a year from wildflowers, trees and heather moorland. All its mead, including a traditional-method sparkling mead, is made in Haltwhistle. Its trade counter and tasting room on Haltwhistle Industrial Estate, at the west end of town, sells honey direct, with an honesty box for honey outside opening hours.
Haltwhistle Honey is a much smaller operation: a beekeeper from a family that has kept bees since the early 1900s, concentrating on breeding locally adapted, disease-resistant bees, with surplus honey and wax for sale.
