Castle Douglas is a market town in the eastern part of Galloway, and both producers here keep bees in the surrounding countryside. Ernespie Farm is a family-run dairy farm on the Old Military Road where beekeeping is a one-man operation: Brian McMicken, who learned the craft from his mother, looks after 16 hives, some of which can be seen near the outdoor play area, and the honey and honeycomb are sold in the farm's gift shop. Glenkens & Dee Honey Co. has apiaries in the hills and fields of the Glenkens, along the banks of Loch Ken and down to the Solway coast, and sells unrefined summer wildflower and soft-set honey.
