Carmarthenshire has a strong bee-farming streak: several producers here breed and sell bees as well as honey. Goitre Fach Honey rears F1 Buckfast queens mated in its own West Wales mating apiaries, Simply Bee at Cwmamman sells colonies and Buckfast queens alongside honey from its own hives, and Gwenyn Gruffydd sells its Welsh honey alongside beekeeping supplies from its shop at Cwrt Henri, near Dryslwyn, open on weekdays.
The honey itself is as varied as the county. From its bee farm at Llangennech, near Llanelli, Mêl Cilgwenyn makes a Carmarthenshire honey from wild meadows and hedgerows, alongside honeys from the Gower saltmarshes, Pembrokeshire and the heather of the Cambrian Mountains, and is stocked widely across south and west Wales. Around Brechfa, Bydafau keeps around 25 hives for Welsh woodland honey and cut comb, and near Lampeter, Ryland Honey sells its honey from the roadside.
Two associations cover the county: Carmarthen & District Beekeeping Association (formerly the Carmarthenshire Beekeepers Association) in the centre and west, and the East Carmarthen Beekeepers Association, whose members come from Llandeilo, Llandovery, Llangadog, Talley, Ammanford and the surrounding area.
